ISLAMABAD: Police arrested 10 women, including prominent human rights activist Dr. Farzana Bari, for violating Section 144 during a march organized on International Women’s Day in Islamabad.
The women attempted to hold a rally despite the ban on public gatherings and protests currently imposed in the federal capital. Authorities had enforced Section 144, which prohibits assemblies, rallies and demonstrations.
Police detained the participants and organizers of the march and later shifted them to a women’s police station. Officials stated that the action was taken because the protest violated the restrictions on public gatherings.
The incident comes as similar restrictions have been extended in Punjab province, where the government recently announced a seven-day extension of Section 144 to maintain law and order.
