ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has decided to open the Torkham and Chaman border crossings on humanitarian grounds following a request from the United Nations.
According to official sources, the Ministry of Commerce, after consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has issued directives to the Member Customs (FBR) and the Director General Transit to facilitate the movement of humanitarian cargo destined for Afghanistan.
Authorities have been instructed to ensure smooth transit of relief consignments belonging to UNICEF, WFP, and UNFPA. The clearance process will be carried out in phases.
In the first phase, containers carrying food supplies will be cleared.
The second phase will allow clearance of consignments containing medicines and medical equipment.
In the third phase, other essential items, including kits for students and teachers, will be processed.
