Netanyahu apologizes for failure to get hostages released

Mounting protests and public anger put Israeli prime minister in a bind.

TEL AVIV: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under immense pressure in the face of massive public protests and outcry over his failure to get the hostages released from Hamas captivity.

After the massive rallies in different cities of Israel at the weekend, the Prime Minister held a press conference and apologized to his people for his inability to bring the hostages back home alive. He told his nation that he had failed to enter into an agreement with Hamas to secure safe release of the hostages. At the same time, however, he warned that Hamas would have to pay the price for the killing of the hostages.

On Saturday, six dead bodies of hostages were recovered from a tunnel in Gaza. The bodies included that of five Israeli and one American nationals. The discovery of the six dead bodies led to the huge protests across Israel, putting pressure on the Prime Minister to enter into a deal with Hamas, end the war and bring back the remaining hostages.

In October last year, Hamas carried out attacks in Israeli areas, killed about 1200 people and took away over 250 others as hostages. The hostages included Israeli and American citizens.

In retaliation, Israel announced a war on Gaza and has killed over 40000 people and displaced all the over two million people of Gaza. Despite repeated calls from the international community and resolutions passed by the UN, Israeli government has refused to stop the war.
