After Iran, UAE also decides to deport temporary Afghan residents

DUBAI: After Iran, the United Arab Emirates has also decided to deport Afghan citizens who were granted temporary shelter during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

According to UAE officials, the individuals being repatriated were those accommodated at the request of the United States. The authorities confirmed that the deportation process began on July 10, 2025, and the U.S. government has been officially notified of the decision.

Thousands of Afghan nationals had been given temporary refuge in the UAE as part of an international humanitarian response after the Taliban takeover in August 2021.

The decision marks a significant shift in regional handling of Afghan refugees, raising humanitarian and diplomatic concerns over the fate of those being sent back to Afghanistan amid ongoing instability.
