Speaking to a private television channel, technology expert Asif Peer said AI is among the most significant innovations of the current century and should not be halted altogether. Instead, he stressed the need for responsible adoption, effective regulation and safety measures to ensure the technology remains under human control.
He said AI can provide answers, information and support for research, but humans must remain responsible for decisions, actions and outcomes resulting from its use. According to him, AI agents operating independently without human supervision cannot be considered responsible AI.
Peer outlined three key principles for AI governance: AI agents should remain under human control, their actions should be aligned with human objectives, and their activities should operate within clearly defined safety limits.
He said the rapid pace of AI development has outstripped the systems designed to regulate the technology, ensure safety and establish effective guardrails. If AI systems ever move beyond meaningful human control, he added, mechanisms must already be in place to bring them back under control.
The technology expert also called for safety principles to be built into AI models and tools from the outset. He said responsible and ethical practices should remain part of the design even when using open-source systems or tools developed by major technology companies.
