Hospital officials said the patient was brought to the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital in Karachi on Thursday after developing a rash. Doctors conducted a medical examination and collected samples for testing, which later confirmed mpox.
Pakistan reported its first confirmed mpox case in April 2023, when a passenger arriving from Saudi Arabia was diagnosed with the disease.
The World Health Organization declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern in August 2024 following a rise in cases across several countries.
Mpox is a viral disease that can spread through close contact with an infected person. Contaminated bedding, clothing and needles can also contribute to transmission.
Early symptoms may include fever, chills, fatigue, headache and muscle weakness, followed by painful or itchy skin lesions that eventually dry and heal.
Infants, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness.
