ISLAMABAD: Army troops were deployed in Islamabad at midnight for the security of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting to be held in the federal capital on Oct 15-16.
The federal government requisitioned the army under Article 245 of the Constitution to help the district administration in maintaing law and order. The army will remain on security duty from Oct 5 to 17.
The army deployment is part of security measures in connection with the 23rd meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization Council of heads of government and visits of VVIP delegations for the event, said a notification issued by the government.
Meanwhile, army troops started patrolling in different parts of the federal capital late on Friday night when all roads in the city were blocked to stop the PTI from holding a protest at D Chowk. However, a large number of people had reached the venue amid shelling of tear gas by police.
Officials in the capital said that deployment of troops in different parts of the city and its suburbs had been completed by midnight. The troops would be on duty till the conclusion of the SCO session.
