At least 60 killed, Several Missing in Nigeria boat accident

MALALE: A tragic boat accident in Nigeria’s northern Niger state has claimed the lives of at least 60 people, with several others still missing, local officials confirmed.

According to reports, the vessel had departed from the village of Tungan Sule in the Malale district and was heading to Doga when it struck a tree trunk in the river and capsized in the north-central region.

Authorities said more than 100 passengers were on board at the time of the accident. Rescue teams have so far recovered dozens of bodies, while some survivors were pulled from the water. Search operations are continuing to locate the missing.

Boat mishaps are common in Nigeria, especially during the rainy season. Experts say accidents are often caused by overloading, poorly maintained vessels, and the absence of life jackets for passengers.
