NEW YORK: Pakistan’s acting permanent representative to the United Nations Usman Jadoon came down hard on Israel for shutting the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

Mr Jadoon said that the move was part of Israel’s genocidal campaign against the people of Palestinian.

It may be mentioned here that Israeli officials cited the involvement of a handful of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees’ thousands of staffers in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel and a few staffers’ membership in Hamas and other armed groups.

“UNRWA workers involved in terrorist activities against Israel must be held accountable,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly meeting, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN said that the passage of the law to ban the UN agency by Israeli parliament was a flagrant violation of the UN Charter, international law, provisional measures set by the International Court of Justice, and the ICJ’s advisory opinion issued on July 19.

He asked the international community, in particular the UN Security Council, to hold Israel accountable for its actions and ensure the unimpeded operations of UNRWA.

The representative of Pakistan demanded that the demonization and delegitimization of UNRWA must be stopped forthwith.

Ambassador Usman Jadoon also proposed to prioritize certain critical steps to ensure peace, uphold human rights, and enforce international law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
