PESHAWAR: A blast at a madrassa on Kohat Road at Dir Colony Zargarabad in Peshawar killed seven people, including children, and injured 72 others, many of them in critical condition. The death toll is expected to rise.
According to SP City Peshawar, the blast may have been caused by explosives. A suspect entered the madrassa at around 8 am carrying explosives, which he left in the mosque, after which the blast took place. It was reported that a part of the madrassa was destroyed, while a pit was dug at the place where the explosives were kept.
Education was going on in the madrassa at the time of the blast, and about 100 children were present in the madrassa building. 55 of the injured were brought to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, hospital sources said. The condition of several of the injured is critical, leading to fears of an increase in deaths.
After the blast, police and other law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area and launched a search operation, while a security alert has been issued in Peshawar city and an emergency situation has been declared in hospitals.
