According to international media reports, the United States has announced additional tariffs on Canadian goods worth around $20 billion, escalating tensions between the two neighbouring countries.

US Customs authorities have also issued guidance regarding the additional duties on selected Canadian imports, providing details on the implementation of the new tariff measures.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada had refused to finalize a trade agreement and continued to take retaliatory measures against the United States.

Greer said Washington had offered Canada more favourable access to the US market but claimed that Ottawa had failed to accept the proposed terms.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the progress made during negotiations was not sufficient to secure the objectives set for the Canadian people.

Carney warned that if the United States proceeds with a 50% tariff on Canadian imports, Canada would respond by imposing tariffs of equivalent value on US goods.

The latest development marks a further escalation in trade tensions between the two countries and could put additional pressure on bilateral economic relations, with businesses and consumers on both sides potentially facing higher costs if the tariff measures remain in place.
