A notice issued by China’s Department of Maritime Safety Administration has banned access to waters from Tonkin Bay to Li Zhou Island from January 27 to 30, but on what scale will naval exercises begin or scale? No details were given.

A group of U.S. warships entered the disputed waters near South China Sea after Biden took office last week, according to the U.S. military, in a move aimed at promoting “freedom of the seas.”

The presence of US forces in disputed waters is a test for Beijing-Washington bilateral relations, as the past few years have seen a steady increase in US military activity, with neighboring Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan and China, however, there is a dispute over these waters.
