China supports expansion of CPEC to Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: China has expressed support for extending the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan, marking a significant development in regional cooperation and connectivity.

According to Foreign Office, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Afghan Interim Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Beijing. The trilateral meeting focused on regional peace, development, and enhanced connectivity.

The Foreign Office spokesperson stated that the three sides emphasized the importance of strengthening diplomatic ties and mutual trust. They also identified a secure environment as a key driver for regional growth.

During the meeting, both Pakistan and China reaffirmed their support for expanding CPEC into Afghanistan and agreed to pursue practical cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

All three countries also reached a consensus on intensifying counter-terrorism efforts and enhancing security cooperation.

The spokesperson further added that the next trilateral meeting of foreign ministers will be hosted in Kabul.
