KISHTWAR: A devastating cloudburst struck the remote hill village of Chashoti in Kishtwar district on Thursday, claiming the lives of 45 people and leaving 38 in critical condition, according to local authorities. Many more are feared trapped under debris.

Rescue teams managed to pull 167 people from the rubble by sunset, with several in serious condition. Officials have warned that the death toll may rise as operations continue.

The disaster occurred between 12 PM and 1 PM near the route to the Machail Mata Temple, a popular pilgrimage site. At the time of the incident, a large number of devotees were present.

The temple, located at an altitude of 9,500 feet, can be reached by vehicle up to Chashoti village, after which pilgrims must travel 8.5 kilometers on foot.

The sudden cloudburst triggered flash floods that swept away multiple buildings, including shops and a security outpost. Authorities have mobilized additional rescue and relief operations to assist survivors and search for those still missing.

Local officials have urged people to avoid traveling to the affected areas until the situation stabilizes. Emergency shelters have been set up nearby, and teams are working to restore communication and transport links disrupted by the floods.
