WASHINGTON: Army chief Gen Asim Munir has stated that the general elections in Pakistan will be held on Feb 8 as scheduled by the Election Commission of Pakistan.
The army chief stated this in reply to a question during his interaction with Pakistani traders in the US at Pakistan’s embassy in Washington. The statement regarding the election comes a few days after the Supreme Court of Pakistan suspended a verdict of the Lahore High Court staying the training of returning officers following which the process for the elections had stopped.
The army chief said that if the elections were delayed for a while based on the petition in LHC filed by a PTI leader, the elections would not go beyond March 2024 when the elections for Senate were also due.
Gen Asim said that as far as he knew, the elections were scheduled to be held on Feb 8 and there would be no delay in it. It may be noted here that the army chief has been on an official visit of the US.
