CHIOS (GREECE): A major maritime accident occurred near the Greek island of Chios, one of the worst in recent years in the country.
According to international news agencies, a Greek Coast Guard ship collided with a migrant boat attempting to cross the border illegally.
Authorities stated that the migrant boat had its navigation lights off and ignored signals from the Coast Guard vessel while trying to change course. The collision caused the small boat to capsize, throwing all passengers into the sea.
Rescue operations saved 25 people, while 14 were confirmed dead, and one more died later in hospital. Many women and children were among the casualties. The rescue involved five Coast Guard boats and a helicopter.
Officials said the boat was about 8 meters long and carrying over 39 passengers, likely exceeding its safe capacity.
Greek Immigration Minister Thanos Plevris told parliament that human smugglers were responsible for the tragedy.
