ISLAMABAD: The power distribution companies have submitted applications to NEPRA to transfer more than Rs52 billion relief to the public under the quarterly adjustment.
The impact of the closure of five Independent Power Producers (IPPs) is about to begin in the shape of relief in power bills of consumers.
According to NEPRA, applications for relief of Rs52 billion to electricity consumers have been submitted to NEPRA. The applications have been submitted for adjustment in the second quarter of the current financial year.
A reduction of Rs50.66 billion has been sought in the capacity charges in the applications. While there are requests for reduction of transmission and distribution losses to the tune of Rs2.66 billion. However, an increase of Rs2.69 billion has also been sought in terms of operations and maintenance.
The quarterly adjustment for October-December 2024 will also apply to certain customers. NEPRA will hear the petitions on February 12, which will also be decided for consumers across the country, including Karachi.
According to NEPRA sources, it is not possible to tell before the hearing how much electricity per unit will be cheaper for consumers.
The government had closed five IPPs of 2400 MW capacity after negotiations with their owners. The major reason for the expected relief of more than Rs52 billion is the termination of these five IPPs.
