Court orders TV channel to apologize to Asma Sherazi

Channel also directed to pay Rs50,000 fine to journalist for airing unfounded news against her.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court on Monday ordered a private TV channel to apologize to senior anchorperson Asma Sherazi and pay her Rs50,000 in fines.

The court issued the order on a petition filed by Sherazi against the channel for airing an unfounded news against her for two days.

In his 14-page ruling, Justice Muhsin Akhtar Kayani also told Sherazi that she can file a defamation case against the channel as well.

According to the court order, under the PEMRA laws it was the responsibility of the TV channel to authenticate any news before airing it. But in the instant case, it didn’t do it and ran a campaign against the female media person.

After the verdict, Sherazi said it was a victory for all journalists especially women who have been facing harassment.
