ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court on Thursday stayed the trial of former prime minister Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the cipher case in Adiala jail.
The court issued the stay order till Jan 11 and directed the prosecution to present all record of the case. The counsel for the petitioners Usman Gul appeared before Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb.
The counsel contended that the trial was continuing on daily basis on the basis of a notification. He said rules were not followed in the trial and the proceedings should be stopped.
The judge asked how many witnesses have so far recorded statements. In reply, the counsel said that the statements of 25 of tge total 28 witnesses have been recorded.
The court raised questions about the in-camera proceedings and said it should have been an open trial with permission to the media and the public to witness the proceedings.
The court stayed the trial till January 11 and saud that legal aspects of the recording of the witnesses’ statements would be looked into on the next hearing.
