QUITO: A violent riot erupted at Machala prison in Ecuador on early this morning, resulting in the deaths of 31 inmates.
According to reports, the disturbance involved the use of weapons, with 4 people killed immediately and several others injured during the initial outbreak.
Authorities later recovered 27 additional bodies from the prison, most of whom reportedly died from suffocation. Ecuadorian officials have launched a thorough investigation to determine the exact causes of the deaths and to understand how the riot escalated so violently.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges in Ecuador’s prison system, including overcrowding, poor security, and management issues, which have contributed to several deadly outbreaks in recent years.
