NEW DELHI: As many as eight former Indian navy officials have been sentenced to death in Qatar for spying for Israel, according to Indian media reports.
The government of India has confirmed the reports but said they were waiting for the details of the verdict. A statement issued by the Indian government said that the former naval officials were working with a company in Qatar.
The government of India said that it was in shock over the verdict but due to its sensitivity more details could not be shared with the media. It said after receiving details, the government would do what was possible to help the convicts.
The fomer Indian naval officials included Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Birendra Kumar Verma, Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Purnendu Tiwari, Sugunakar Pakala, Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Rajesh.
The eight former Indian naval officials were arrested in 2022 on the charge of spying for Israel while working with a company in Qatar. They were accused of providing the details of the purchase of a submarine manufactured in Italy for Qatar.
