GILGIT: At least eight local volunteers lost their lives on Monday when a landslide struck the Danyore Nullah area in Gilgit, burying them under debris.
According to police, the volunteers were working to restore a flood-damaged water channel when a mass of earth suddenly collapsed, trapping several individuals beneath it.
Hospital sources confirmed that eight bodies have been recovered so far, while three injured persons are receiving treatment. Authorities fear that more people may still be trapped under the debris.
Rescue operations, assisted by local residents, are underway despite challenging conditions. Emergency measures have been implemented in nearby hospitals to accommodate victims of the disaster.
Heavy rainfall and unstable terrain in the region have increased the risk of further landslides, officials warned, urging residents to remain cautious.
