NEW YORK: During a Times Square public safety announcement, Mayor Eric Adams addressed questions from reporters regarding media coverage related to a recently published book by his former aide, Jasmine Ray.
The book, Political Humanity: A Memoir of Love, Legacy and New York City Politics, recounts her professional relationship with the mayor and provides an inside look into city politics, offering readers a perspective on her experiences working closely with city leadership.
Adams denied claims concerning any personal aspects of their relationship and criticized what he described as misrepresentations in the media reporting. He also highlighted his concerns about how the press has historically portrayed him, arguing that coverage has at times focused disproportionately on personal matters rather than policy accomplishments or city governance.
Administration Achievements
Before addressing the controversy surrounding media coverage, Adams used much of the briefing to emphasize accomplishments of his administration. He pointed to crime reduction, noting that shooting incidents have declined by 34% since 2018, and stressed the importance of public safety as the foundation for the city’s overall growth and prosperity.
In addition, he highlighted housing initiatives, noting that his administration has approved more housing through rezoning than the previous two administrations combined, which he described as a major step toward addressing long-standing housing challenges in the city.
He also cited expanded social programs, including after-school initiatives, college aid for foster youth, and increased support for small businesses, presenting these as evidence of his administration’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers.
Subway Safety and Mental Health
Adams also addressed questions about recent subway incidents, including a fatal assault near Jay Street–MetroTech Station. He cited state legislation as a barrier to addressing severe mental health crises and emphasized city programs such as SCOUT and PATH, which have assisted more than 1,000 individuals in securing stable housing.
According to city data, subway crime remains low, with an average of approximately five felonies occurring daily among 4.5 million riders. He rejected claims suggesting that his administration manipulated crime statistics, insisting that the data reflects an accurate picture of current trends.
Legal and Political Context
When asked about legal matters involving New York Attorney General Letitia James, Adams urged that the judicial process be allowed to proceed without interference. He also referenced his own federal legal case, describing it as politically motivated and emphasizing the need for fairness in public discourse.
The mayor expressed disappointment toward former allies who distanced themselves during his legal challenges, but he reaffirmed his continued commitment to serving New York City and addressing the needs of its residents.
