The train was travelling from Karachi to Peshawar when the accident occurred at around 5:15 a.m., according to rescue officials. Women and children were among the injured, who were shifted to Nishtar Hospital in Multan for medical treatment.

Rescue operations continued at the site, while affected passengers were seen sitting alongside the railway tracks with their belongings. Train operations on the up track were suspended following the incident, and Multan railway division officials reached the scene.

Railway authorities said between 500 and 600 passengers were aboard the train. Thirteen coaches had been cleared by the time of the report, while operations involving the remaining coach continued.

Some sources claimed the train was travelling at a high speed when the accident occurred, but the exact cause of the derailment had not been established.

A passenger also claimed that the nuts and bolts of coach number nine had been repaired near Rohri. However, the claim has not been independently verified, and no link between the reported repair and the accident has been established.

The incident marks the fourth reported passenger train derailment in Pakistan in approximately two weeks. Previous incidents involved the Pakistan Express near Kharian, the Shalimar Express travelling from Karachi to Lahore, and the Jaffar Express travelling from Peshawar to Quetta.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took notice of the accident and expressed sorrow over the casualties. He directed the relevant authorities to accelerate rescue operations and ensure the injured received the best possible medical care.
