DOHA: Former Indian Navy officer Commander Purnendu Tiwari has been detained again in Qatar, reigniting international attention on a sensitive case involving the Indian military.

According to reports, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed Tiwari’s re-arrest in Qatar. He was initially detained in August 2022 along with seven other former naval officers.

In October 2023, a Qatari court sentenced all eight officers to death on charges of espionage, which caused widespread concern in India. Despite diplomatic efforts by the Indian government, Tiwari was not handed over to India in February 2024 due to the severity of the allegations against him.

Defense analysts note that this case is not limited to a single individual; it raises questions about the professional reputation, training, and internal discipline of the Indian armed forces.

Past reports have highlighted issues of corruption, internal misconduct, and ethical concerns within the Indian military.
