GILGIT: In the inaugural session of the newly-formed Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, key leadership positions were filled unopposed, marking a swift conclusion to the region’s initial government formation process.
Amjad Hussain Advocate, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) nominee, has been elected Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan without contest. His election came after he secured the support of a clear majority in the 33-member assembly, making any rival candidacy unnecessary.
Earlier in the same session, Imran Nadim was elected Speaker of the Assembly, also unopposed. Meanwhile, Kifayatullah of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was elected Deputy Speaker without opposition.
According to the details shared during the session, the PPP has secured the backing of 28 members in the 33-seat house, giving it a comfortable majority to form the government.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly consists of 33 seats, including 24 general seats, six reserved seats for women, and three seats for technocrats and professionals. So far, 30 members have taken oath in the first sitting, while election results for several general seats are still awaiting formal notification by the Election Commission.
With key positions already filled and a clear majority established, the PPP is set to lead the new government in the region.
