ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet on Tuesday approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, Radio Pakistan reported.
The elevation comes in recognition of his exceptional leadership and strategic command during the successful Marka-e-Haq campaign against Indian aggression.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting held in Islamabad, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The Prime Minister also held a separate meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari to take him into confidence prior to the announcement.
General Asim Munir becomes the second officer in Pakistan’s history to attain the rank of Field Marshal, a move hailed by cabinet members as a tribute to his courageous service and military acumen.
In another significant development, the cabinet unanimously decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, allowing him to continue his services beyond the current term.
The cabinet further approved a plan to confer high-level civilian and military awards on officers, soldiers, ghazis, martyrs, and notable civilians who rendered outstanding services during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.
These decisions, officials said, reflect the government’s deep appreciation of the Armed Forces and their unwavering dedication to the nation’s security and sovereignty.
