ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan was on Thursday informed that the election commission was ready to hold general elections in the country on February 11, 2024.
The date was given to the apex court by Sajil Swati, the counsel for Election Commission of Pakistan, during the hearing of a petition filed for holding the elections under the constitution in 90 days after the dissolution of National Assembly on August 10, 2023.
He said the process of delimitations will be completed by November 30.
The chief justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa asked the counsel if the commission had taken the president of Pakistan on board. He directed the ECP lawyer to consult the president on the election date before final announcement.
The petition was filed by the PTI and others against the caretaker government’s inability to hold the elections in 90 days after the National Assembly was dussolved in early August.
The federal government has been saying that the announcement of the election schedule was the prerogative of the ECP and the caretakers were bound to provide it support for completion of the process.
Earlier, the government had expressed the hope that the elections would be held in January.
However, it us for the first time that the ECP has given a specific date for holding of the elections in front of the apex court.
