ISLAMABAD: Despite hectic efforts, the government failed to garner support for the passage of the constitutional package from parliament.
PML-N leader Irfan Siddiqui told media in Parliament House that the sessions of the Senate and National Assembly scheduled for today were being postponed for an indefinite period. It will take a week or 10 days to develop consensus on the amendments.
Mr Siddiqui said that there was no issue if number of the members in parliament but a consensus was yet to reach on some of the changes being made to different sections of the constitution.
The government was set to introduce the constitutional package in the parliament on Sunday night but the sessions of the two houses were postponed for Monday and there was no consensus today either.
JUI-F chief Molana Fazlur Rehman yesterday advised the government not to hurry the passage of the bill even though the government tried to persuade him on the matter throughout the day.
After the amendments to the constitution, the appointment of the chief justice of Pakistan will be made by the government from a panel of five senior judges of the apex court. the government will also appoint judges of the constitutional court.
The articles set for amendments include 51, 63, 175 and 187. There is also an amendment to increase the number of seats of the Balochistan assembly from the current 65 to 81. Article 63 is also being amended including the section related to the votes of disgruntled members of any political party who cross floor.
The amendments also seek the establishment of a constitutional court that will hear constitution related cases and for this changes are being made to articles 184, 185 and 186.
