GWADAR: The Gwadar International Airport, established through the cooperation of China in Balochistan, was made operational on Monday.
A spokesperson for Pakistan Airports Authority in a statement said that the international airport became operational on January 20 as scheduled.
However, the first flight from Karachi to New Gwadar Airport, the main project of the CPEC corridor, was delayed. According to the flight schedule, PIA flight PK-503 from Karachi was the first flight that landed at New Gwadar International Airport.
According to aviation sources, the departure of this flight from Karachi was delayed by 45 minutes. The first flight from Karachi was given a water salute upon landing at New Gwadar Airport.
A colourful function was also held on the occasion. Gwadar International Airport is the largest airport in Pakistan in terms of area, built on 430 acres at the location of Gawardani, 26 km from Gwadar city. The airport wasvbuilt at a cost of Rs50 billion. The single runway of Gwadar Airport is 3,658 meters long and 75 meters wide, which has the capacity to accommodate large aircraft. The airport will also be able to land large aircraft such as Airbus A380 and Boeing 747.
The airport was symbolically inaugurated by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on October 14, 2024, but the regular landing of flights at the airport is starting from today.
