According to officials, the case came to light after the District Health Officer of Korangi reported the newborn’s infection.

An investigation found that the baby had undergone circumcision at the facility, where instruments were reportedly contaminated with the mpox virus. Laboratory testing at Dow University confirmed the infection.

The facility, located in the Malir 15 area within the jurisdiction of Saudabad Police Station, was allegedly operating illegally and employing unqualified practitioners to perform circumcisions on children.

The Sindh Healthcare Commission carried out the operation with assistance from the District Health Officer and the Senior Superintendent of Police in Korangi after receiving a complaint from the district health administration.

Officials said hospital staff resisted the action and called in associates, prompting police assistance. Authorities subsequently inspected and sealed the premises, while some individuals reportedly fled the scene.

The action was taken over alleged poor sanitation, inadequate infection prevention and control measures, and unauthorised medical activities that officials said posed serious risks to patient safety and public health.
