IHC Forms Larger Bench in Dr. Aafia Siddiqui Case

ISLAMABAD: In a significant development in the case concerning the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has constituted a four-member larger bench to hear contempt proceedings against the Prime Minister and members of the federal cabinet.

According to the court’s cause list, the case has been fixed for hearing on September 10. The larger bench will be headed by Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, while Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro, Justice Azam Khan, and Justice Raja Inam Amin Minhas will also be part of the bench.

Sources said that on September 1, Justice Inam Amin Minhas had referred the file to the Chief Justice for the formation of a larger bench.

Previously, the case was being heard by Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, who had issued contempt notices to the Prime Minister and cabinet members for allegedly defying court orders. However, following his assignment to a special division bench for tax cases, the pending matters from his single bench were transferred.

The case revolves around a petition seeking the government’s efforts for the repatriation and release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, currently imprisoned in the United States.
