ISLAMABAD: Senior Judge of the Islamabad High Court Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani expressed strong displeasure over the lawyers’ strike, criticizing both the legal community and the judiciary.
During the hearing of a case, he remarked that both judges and courts had become “ineffective” and “moribund.”
Justice Kayani made the remarks during a hearing concerning the Islamabad High Court Bar’s strike. The case involved the absence of a lawyer who failed to appear due to the ongoing strike. The judge ordered the preparation of a written ruling in response to the lawyer’s non-appearance.
When the court was informed that the lawyers were on strike, Justice Kayani inquired about the reason behind it. Barrister Khush Bakht explained that the strike was a protest against the arrests of prominent figures, Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chatha.
In response, Justice Kayani sharply criticized the protest, saying, “These are the people who themselves have arranged the arrests and sent these individuals to jail. Now they are protesting. What a great bar we have; they deserve a medal.”
He went on to express his frustration, stating that the judiciary had become “ineffective,” with courts failing to function properly. “The bar itself arranged for the arrest of these lawyers, and without any legal grounds, the judge passed a remarkable decision,” he added.
