RAWALPINDI: Two days after the general elections in which PTI-backed candidates made a near clean sweep, an anti-terrorism court here granted bail to Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi in 12 terror cases.
The cases related to violence that broke out soon after the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan in a corruption case in Islamabad on May 9, 2023.
Anti-terrorism court judge Malik Ijaz took up the applications of the two PTI leaders. Their counsel Shiraz Ahmad Ranjha pleaded gor bail. However, the prosecution requested the court to give them more time.
The judge rejected the prosecution plea and granted bail to both Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi in 12 terror cases registered against them in different police station in connection with the May 9 arson attacks.
They were told to deposit surety bonds in the cases. The two however could not be released as Imran Khan has been convicted and sentenced to prison gor 10, 14 and seven years in three other cases.
Meanwhile, former interior minister and Imran’s ally Sheikh Rashid Ahmad was also granted bail in May 9 cased and ordered to be released from jail.
The court directed the police to release the chief of AML if he was not wanted in any other case. It may be mentioned here that Sheikh Rashid was defeated in the election by PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi in Rawalpindi.
