TEHRAN: Iran has retaliated against the U.S. for destroying it’s warship near Sri Lanka a day earlier by striking an American an American tanker in the northern part of the Persian Gulf.
An official statement said the vessel was hit by a missile, and the resulting fire on the tanker continues to burn. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed full control over the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea.
Independent verification of the attack has not yet been confirmed by international sources. The UK’s Maritime Trade Organization had reported earlier that a tanker near Kuwait’s coast in the northern Persian Gulf experienced a powerful explosion, after which a small boat was seen departing from the scene.
Oil was observed spilling into the water, raising environmental concerns. The tanker reportedly took on some water, but the crew remained safe.
As of now, the U.S. has neither confirmed nor denied the incident. Iran is expected to release further details soon.
