Araghchi made the remarks in a post on social media platform X on Tuesday, amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Russia’s efforts to play a diplomatic role through mediation.

The Iranian foreign minister hosted his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on Monday. It was Lavrov’s first visit to Iran since the war began. The two ministers discussed regional developments and bilateral relations.

According to Araghchi, their talks covered a range of issues extending from Europe to West Asia, including the situations in Lebanon, Palestine, Ukraine and Yemen. They also focused on expanding economic and nuclear cooperation between the two countries.

In his social media statement, Araghchi reiterated that Iran and Russia had never maintained such close cooperation at any point in their history.

The growing partnership comes as conflict and tensions continue to affect the wider Middle East. Russia has been seeking to strengthen its diplomatic role in the region through efforts to mediate the conflict.

However, no details of any new economic or nuclear agreements were announced following the meeting. Araghchi’s remarks indicate a shared interest in maintaining close contacts and further expanding cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.
