BAGHDAD: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Iran will maintain full oversight of the Strait of Hormuz for the next 30 days.
It warned that intervention by any external party in restoring maritime traffic through the strategic waterway would further complicate the regional situation.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein in Baghdad, Araghchi said the ongoing conflict has been harmful to the entire region and stressed that all countries must work together to preserve regional security.
He also stated that Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon and an end to its military operations there are essential components of any interim agreement involving the United States.
The Iranian foreign minister thanked the Iraqi government for condemning attacks on Iran and reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to expanding strategic cooperation with Iraq.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said Iraq and Iran share longstanding historical and cultural ties and confirmed that the two sides discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues, including the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Hussein noted that while a ceasefire is being pursued in one part of the region, clashes continue around the Strait of Hormuz. He added that disruptions in the waterway have negatively affected Iraq’s economy and public finances, and said Iraq also faced multiple security challenges during the recent Iran–U.S. conflict.
