Lavrov said the agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye envisions a framework for collective security and defence cooperation. He added that if the terms for Iran’s participation are agreed upon, its inclusion could further advance regional security.
The Russian foreign minister said membership of the alliance would not be restricted to Gulf countries, with other states also able to join.
He noted that Egypt’s possible participation has frequently been discussed, while Algeria’s reported interest in the framework could also be viewed as a positive development.
Lavrov’s remarks come as regional countries explore broader security and defence cooperation through the Mecca Pact, with discussions continuing over possible expansion of the alliance.
