Ambassador expresses her condolences over human and material losses caused by recent floods in KP and other parts of Pakistan.
PESHAWAR: Italian Ambassador to Pakistan Marilina Armellin met with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and discussed strengthening bilateral ties and addressing shared challenges, including climate change and regional security.
Ambassador Armellin expressed her condolences over the human and material losses caused by recent floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of the country. She also briefed the governor on her engagements during her stay in Peshawar.
The two dignitaries discussed opportunities for enhancing cooperation in various sectors, particularly tourism, education, and vocational training. They also exchanged views on critical issues such as border management, narcotics control, and counter-terrorism efforts.
Governor Kundi highlighted the unique challenges faced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, noting that the security and environmental situations in these provinces differ significantly from the rest of the country. He pointed out that the province is currently facing severe threats from climate change, including cloudbursts and other extreme weather events.
He remarked that during his recent visit to Spain, he participated in discussions centered around climate challenges. “There is currently no reliable early warning mechanism in place to detect or respond to cloudbursts,” he noted, emphasizing the urgent need for international collaboration on environmental monitoring and disaster preparedness.
Ambassador Armellin acknowledged that Italy, like Pakistan, is grappling with the impacts of climate change. She expressed a strong interest in enhancing cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in the area of skilled labor migration. She emphasized Italy’s need for trained professionals and artisans, and welcomed the idea of drawing from Pakistan’s growing pool of skilled workers.
In response, Governor Kundi highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to develop a competent workforce through institutions like NAVTTC and TEVTA. “We are committed to preparing and exporting top-tier skilled labor from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and across the country,” he said. “Investing in our youth and creating opportunities for their advancement is among our highest priorities.”
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepening Pakistan-Italy relations through sustained dialogue and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
