LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami has announced the launch of a nationwide public referendum starting from January 15.
The announcement was made by the party’s Ameer, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman at a gathering at Mansoorah in Lahore.
Speaking on the occasion, Rehman criticized mainstream political parties, stating that internal democracy is absent and power remains concentrated within a few families. He said that democratic processes, particularly local government systems in Punjab and Sindh, are being deliberately undermined.
He said that authority should be transferred to the grassroots level and termed the Punjab Local Government Act illegal, demanding that local body elections be held on time.
The Jamaat-e-Islami chief said the party believes in bringing change while remaining within the system and has always adopted a gradual and evolutionary approach.
Rehman reiterated that the proposed public referendum would aim to mobilize citizens and raise awareness about democratic rights and governance reforms across the country.
