ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Interior on Tuesday formed a joint investigation team (JIT) to trace those running smear campaigns against senior judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior, the JIT comprises four members and is headed by the additional director cyber crime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency.
The JIT would have members from the Inter-Services Intelligence, Intelligence Bureau and Pakistan Telecommunication Agency.
The team will trace all those behind the ongoing character assassination drive against judges and present them before the court.
Legal action would be taken against those found involved in the drive on social media.
The JIT will also come up with recommendations to stop such incidents in future.
It may be mentioned here that after the Supreme Court maintained the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan to take back the election symbol of ‘Bat’ from the PTI, social media has been flooded with condemnation of the chief justice of Pakistan.
The supporters of the PTI have launched misleading propaganda against senior judges. Similar drive was also launched against the army when the PTI chief was arrested last year.
The supporters of the PTI have been habitual of running similar campaigns against leaders of rival political parties especially the PML-N, PPP and the JUI-F.
Observers have for long been calling gor regulations to keep some types of checks on social media users. Most of those behind these campaigns are said to be operating from abroad that skip action under by the Pakistani laws.
