The decision was taken during an emergency cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. Under the approved changes, the provincial government will have authority over police appointments and transfers.
The policy-making powers related to police operations, finances and administration will also be transferred from the inspector general to the chief minister.
The provincial government will issue the notification for the appointment of the KP inspector general, while transfers of deputy superintendents of police, superintendents of police, district police officers and regional police officers will require the chief minister’s approval.
The new arrangements also state that police will not directly submit replies in legal or other matters. Responses approved by the Law Department and the Advocate General’s Office will be submitted on behalf of the police.
In the absence of the inspector general, the Additional IG Headquarters will assume the charge of looking after the office.
The development comes after reported differences between the KP government and the provincial police chief.
According to the report, the provincial government was displeased after the IG submitted a response to the Islamabad High Court regarding the planned long march without consulting the provincial administration.
