PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Thursday passed the Parks and Horticulture Bill 2024, aimed at establishing a new authority to oversee the maintenance and development of parks and horticultural spaces across the province.
The bill, introduced by the Minister for Local Government Arshad Ayub, seeks to create a more structured approach to green space management. A Board of Directors, known as the “Board of Directors of the Authority,” will be formed, with the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the chairperson and the Minister, Advisor, or Special Assistant for Local Government as vice-chairman.
The board will consist of 14 members, with a quorum of seven members required for meetings. The newly established authority will be responsible for creating and maintaining parks, green belts, and green areas across the province, regulating these spaces, and establishing botanical gardens.
In another development, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly’s opposition benches raised concerns over the deteriorating sports facilities in Dera Ismail Khan. Opposition MPA Ihsanullah Mian Khel raised a “Call Attention Notice” highlighting the poor condition of the only stadium in Daraban tehsil, Dera Ismail khan which has become completely unusable.
Provincial Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Fakhar Jahan assured that the repair of the stadium is under consideration, and approval for the restoration work will be granted within the next two weeks.
