PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakthunkhwa government has put a ban on purchase of new vehicles by government departments as part of its austerity measures.
The austerity measures also include a ban on travelling abroad on government expenses by officials and functionaries and holding of workshops and other events.
After approval by the provincial cabinet, the finance department has directed all government departments concerned to follow the standard operating procedures to ensure implementation of the austerity measures.
According to the SOPs, the chief minister can approve new appointments on vacant posts on case to case basis. It said there will be a ban in the purchase of vehicles except ambulances, fire trucks, tractors and required machinery till further orders.
Moreover, extension in the contract of project employees could be made in consultation with the finance department.
It may be mentioned here that in the past too similar austerity measures were announced by both the federal and provincial governments, but they were rarely followed.
Most of the revenue of the government is eaten up by unnecessary and luxurious spending on protocol and perks and privileges of government functionaries.
