NEW YORK: Former prime minister and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif here said that his daughter and Punjab chief minister Maryam Nawaz wants to buy PIA and launch a new airline.

Mr Sharif, who is on a week-long visit to US, told a gathering that Maryam had suggested to buy the PIA and launch a brand new airlines. He said that there was a federal minister in the cabinet of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan who had claimed that the PIA pilots held fake degrees. It was wrong and even if any pilot had a fake license should a minister say it in public? Now that former minister is in the hiding, he added.

He said Maryam Nawaz wants that we should buy PIA, buy new planes and launch a new airlines with the name of Air Punjab. The new airline can have services within Pakistan and to different parts of the world, he added.

It may be noted that the privatization of PIA has hit snags as five of the six bidders have disappeared while the only one has refused to increase its offer from Rs10 billion. The PIA is worth over 100 billion rupees.

After the refusal of the bidder to increase the offer, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Investment Board offered more than Rs10 billion for the PIA.
