Mbappé Double Sends France into World Cup Last 16
NEW YORK: Kylian Mbappé scored twice as France cruised to a 3-0 victory over Sweden, booking a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, where they will face Paraguay.
France dominated from the outset and broke the deadlock just before halftime when Mbappé finished from an Ousmane Dembélé pass after beating his marker.
Bradley Barcola doubled the lead early in the second half, converting a precise assist from Michael Olise.
Mbappé sealed the win in the 74th minute, once again finishing off an Olise pass to score his second goal of the match and France’s third.
With the brace, Mbappé became the highest scorer in FIFA World Cup knockout-stage history with 10 goals. He also moved level with Lionel Messi at the top of the tournament’s Golden Boot standings with six goals each.
France will next face Paraguay, which advanced after eliminating four-time champions Germany in a penalty shootout.
