TUNIS: At least 40 people have died after a migrant boat sank off the coast of Tunisia, local authorities and international news agencies report.
The vessel, carrying around 70 passengers attempting to reach Europe, capsized near the coastal city of Mahdia.
Tunisian officials say that 30 people were rescued while 40 bodies have been recovered. The migrants on board were from various African countries.
A Tunisian police officer described the incident as one of the deadliest maritime accidents in the region this year, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by migrants attempting the perilous journey to Europe.
