BAGHDAD: A missile struck the compound of the United States Embassy in Baghdad early Saturday, raising fresh concerns about security in the region.
According to Reuters, Iraqi security sources confirmed that the projectile landed inside the heavily fortified diplomatic area.
The embassy is located inside Baghdad’s high-security Green Zone, which houses government offices and foreign embassies. Witnesses reported seeing a column of smoke rising from the compound after the strike.
Initial reports suggest the missile hit near a helipad within the embassy complex, though officials have not yet confirmed the full extent of the damage. So far, no casualties have been officially reported.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, where attacks on diplomatic and military facilities have increased in recent weeks. Security around the embassy and surrounding areas has reportedly been tightened following the strike.
Authorities are still investigating who launched the missile, and no group has claimed responsibility at the time of the report.
