KARACHI: Renowned Islamic scholar Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani has said that imposing the Transgender Act would amount to “opening the door to homosexuality.”

Addressing a gathering in Karachi, Mufti  Usmani stated that Pakistan is facing numerous challenges and that a constitutional struggle is the only legitimate way to enforce Sharia in the country.

He said that armed struggle is completely against Islamic teachings and tantamount to rebellion.

He called for the appointment of qualified religious scholars to the Federal Shariat Court in accordance with constitutional requirements.

Referring to the 26th Constitutional Amendment, he welcomed changes related to interest (riba) but expressed concern that all banks were being exempted from the amendment, which he said undermines the constitutional obligation to eliminate interest.

Mufti Usmani praised Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for his efforts regarding the abolition of interest, calling them commendable. He reiterated that ignoring constitutional requirements on riba is unacceptable.

He said the country is grappling with terrorism, strained relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and long-pending issues related to religious seminaries (madaris).
