Bill introduced by govt seeks to increase number of Supreme Court judges from 17 to 23.

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday referred a bill introduced in the house to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court of Pakistan to the relevant committee for vetting.

The bill was presented in the house by Pakistan Muslim League member Danial Choudhary. Information Minister Ata Tarar told the house that the bill presented in the Senate of Pakistan had been referred to the committee concerned. He said he gad no objection if the bill was sent to the committee for vetting.

Under the bill, the government has proposed to increase the number of Supreme Court judges from 17 to 23. The increase has been promised in order to end backlog of cases in the top court of the country.

The bill also stated that with the changing scenario in the world, there was also a need for inclusion of cyber crime, climate change and international trade experts in the supreme court. Moreover, top courts in the world have more than 30 or 40 judges to dispose of cases and provide speedy justice to the citizens.
